How to Remove Profile Icon in Google Chrome Browser

Don’t like the user profile icon in the Google Chrome browser? Here’s how you can remove the profile icon in Google Chrome.

When it comes to browsers, Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers like Edge Chromium are the kings in terms of market share, compatibility with various web technologies, and features. One of the most useful features of Chrome and Edge Chromium is that you can create different user profiles. Each user profile runs independently of other profiles so that you don’t have to share your browsing data or extensions with the other users. You can even sign in to your Google or Microsoft account to sync browser data between devices.

When you create a new user profile in Chrome, the browser will add a profile icon next to the address bar and right before the Menu icon. This makes it so that you can easily identify the user profile and switch to a different profile if need be. Generally, the user profile icon is imported directly from your Google account, if you are signed in. If you are not signed in, a random image will be chosen from the catalog.

If you don’t like having user profile icon appearing front and center in Chrome, you can sort of remove it. Here’s how.

Note: I know I titled this ‘how to remove’ but the reality is that Google removed the option to remove the profile icon. So, all you can do is make it less obvious. I will update the article either when Google adds the said feature or when I find some other way.

Remove Profile Icon Google Chrome

Like I said in the note, you cannot entirely remove the user profile icon. However, you can make it less obvious by changing the icon and name.

1. Open the Google Chrome browser if it is not already opened. After opening it, click on the user icon to open the flyout menu. Here, click on the user account name appearing on top of the user icon.

2. As soon as you click on the option, you will be taken to the profile page. Here, enter the name of your choice in the top field under the “Edit person” section and select the profile icon of your choice.

That is it. The changes are automatically saved and reflected instantly. You can see the new profile icon in the address bar. In fact, the icon is also changed in the taskbar too.

Wrapping Up

If you’ve pinned Google Chrome to the taskbar, as soon as you change the profile icon and name, the taskbar icon will be unpinned automatically. You have manually re-pin the icon.

Do keep in mind that, though you can change the profile icon and name, you cannot hide the email address that appears when you click on the profile icon. It will be visible as long as you are signed in to your Google account.

That is it. I hope that helps. If you are stuck or need some help, comment below and I will try to help as much as possible. If you like this article, do check out how to auto-hide downloads bar in Chrome and how to create your own Chrome theme.
