Remove Administrator Account in Windows 11 in 3 Steps

Windows user accounts

Windows provides a straightforward method for deleting or removing an administrator account that is no longer needed. This guide shows you how to do it in simple steps.

In Windows 11, creating an administrator account is as easy as a few clicks, as long as you have the necessary administrator rights. When the account is no longer needed, removing it is just as simple. For instance, I recently had to create a local administrator account on Windows 11 for testing purposes. Once I finished using it, I deleted the administrator account to clean up the system and ensure that no unauthorized user could access it.

This guide will teach you the simplest way to remove an administrator account in Windows 11.

Things to do before deleting the admin account

Before moving forward with deleting an admin account, there are a few things you should keep in mind and do to make sure there is no data loss or unintended consequences. Here’s what they are.

  1. Backup user files: Before deleting an account, open the user’s home folder by going to the “C:\Users\Username” location in the File Explorer and copy all the files and folders in it to a separate drive/partition. This ensures that you’ve backed up all the user profile files and folders which will be automatically deleted when you remove the admin account in Windows 11.
  2. Transfer ownership of files and folders: If you change the ownership of files or folders, it is better to transfer the ownership to another administrator account in the system to avoid any permission issues. It’s not mandatory but a ‘nice to do’ as it eliminates the need to change ownership after the fact.
  3. Backup important settings and other account information: If the administrator account being deleted has any important settings, preferences, or associated email accounts, make sure to save this information for future reference or configuration.

Remove administrator account Windows 11

Important note: You need administrator rights to remove an admin account in Windows 11. If your computer only has one admin account and you want to remove it, you have to create another administrator account, log into it, and proceed with the below steps.

Windows 11 users follow the below steps to remove the administrator account:

  1. Log into Windows 11 as an administrator.
  2. Open the Windows 11 Settings app.
  3. Navigate to the “Accounts” tab on the sidebar.
  4. Click on the “Other users” option under “Account Settings.”
  5. Click on the administrator user you want to remove.
  6. Click/tap the “Remove” button.
  7. Press the “Delete account and data” button.
  8. The administrator account is removed in Windows 11.
  9. Close the Settings app.

Let’s see these steps in detail:

Firstly, log into your Windows 11 computer as an administrator. Keep in mind that you should not log into the same account that you want to remove. If your computer has only one admin account and you want to remove it then create a new admin account and log into it.

After that, launch the Windows 11 Settings app. You can use the Start key + I keyboard shortcut or click the Settings icon (gear) icon in the Start menu or Quick Settings panel (Win + I).

Once the Windows 11 Settings app opens, navigate to the “Accounts” tab on the sidebar, scroll down to the “Account Settings” section on the right pane, and click on the “Other users” option. This is where you can manage all the Windows users you created/added (other than family user accounts).

Once you are on this page, find the Windows 11 administrator account you want to remove and click on it to expand. Next, click the “Remove” button and then click on the “Delete account and data” button to confirm your action.

That’s it. The administrator account is removed from Windows 11. You can close the Windows 11 Settings app.
