The new Edge update comes with a new feature called Vertical Tabs. Here’s how you can turn on or turn off Vertical Tabs and how to use it.
Microsoft is rapidly developing the Edge Chromium browser. In fact, with every major release, the Edge browser is getting one or more new features along with the obvious quality of life improvements and security fixes.
In the Edge v89 update, Microsoft added the much-awaited Vertical Tabs feature. When enabled, the Virtual Tabs feature makes it possible to show all your tabs to the right side of the Edge window. This makes it easy to access all the tabs in one place and the Edge browser looks pretty compact. If needed, you can even hide all your tabs while they are in the Vertical Tabs mode. Not only that but on wider screens, the Vertical Tabs are incredibly useful.
In this quick and simple guide, let me show the steps to turn on or turn off Vertical Tabs in Edge browser in Windows operating system.
Important note: You should be using Edge v89 or higher to use the Vertical Tabs feature. You can check the Edge version by going to the “Menu -> Help and feedback -> About Microsoft Edge” page.
Turn on Vertical Tabs in Edge
The Vertical Tabs feature is turned on by default. If it is not then you can turn it on from the Edge Settings page. Here is how.
- Open the Edge browser.
- Type “edge://settings/appearance” in the address bar.
- Press Enter to open the appearance page.
- Turn on the “Show vertical tabs button” option.
Once you do that, you will see a new button called “Turn on vertical tabs” in the top-left corner of the screen. Click on the button to activate the vertical tabs.
Once activated, this how the vertical tabs will look like in the Edge browser.
As I said before, you can hide vertical tabs. To do that, click on the little left arrow icon at the top on the vertical tabs panel. As soon as you click on it, the vertical tabs will be hidden.
To fully show the vertical tabs again, hover your mouse over the tabs and click on the “Pin” icon. This action will pin the vertical tabs panel to the left side and shows all the tabs.
When you no longer need the vertical tabs, you can restore the traditional tabs style. i.e, tabs in the title bar by click on the “Turn off vertical tabs” button in the panel.

If you are not using the vertical tabs feature, you can completely turn it off and remove the vertical tabs button from the Edge title bar. This action will free up a bit more space in the title bar. Here is how to do it.

- Type “edge://settings/appearance” in the address bar.
- Press Enter to open the appearance page.
- Turn off the “Show vertical tabs button” option.
That is it. With that, you’ve successfully turned off vertical tabs in the Edge browser.
