When creating a user account in Windows 10, it gives you two choices. First, using a Microsoft account, and the second is a traditional local user account. Compared to the local user account, the Microsoft account in Windows 10 gives you access to additional features like settings sync, app history sync, easy app integration, etc. Even the Windows 10 license key is linked to your Microsoft account, depending on the license type.

Though linking Windows 10 with Microsoft account gives you additional features, there might be situations where you don’t want to use it. For example, maybe you want to use your laptop as a media center or an offline machine; perhaps you don’t want to share your data with Microsoft, etc. No matter the reason, if you don’t want to use a Microsoft account, you can remove it from your laptop.

To remove the Microsoft account from the laptop or PC, follow these steps.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to “Accounts.”
  3. Select “Your info” on the sidebar.
  4. Click the “Sign in with local account instead” link.
  5. Push the “Next” button.
  6. Type the password or pin and press Enter.
  7. Type username in the first field.
  8. Enter the password in the following two fields.
  9. Type a password hint in the fourth field.
  10. Click “Next.”
  11. Click the “Sign out and finish” button.
  12. With that, you have removed your Microsoft account in Windows 10.

First, open the Windows 10 Settings app with the “Windows key + I” shortcut or search for it in the Start menu. After opening the Settings app, go to the “Accounts -> Your info” page. This page contains all the essential information regarding your Windows 10 user account.

Next, click on the “Sign in with local account instead” link in the main panel. This will open the local account transfer process.

As soon as you click on the link, you will see a new prompt asking for confirmation. Click on the “Next” button to continue.

Note: If your device is encrypted, you will see a message asking to backup the recovery key. If you haven’t already done it, click the “Close and backup” button, open the Start menu, search & open “Backup your recovery key,” click the “Backup your recovery key” link, and follow the wizard. Once done, follow along with the next steps.

When prompted for authentication, type the password or pin and press Enter.

Now, type the username of your choice, password, and password hint and click the “Next” button.

Finally, click the “Sign out and finish” button.

That is it. With that, you’ve removed your Microsoft account from your laptop or desktop computer. From now on, you can use the local account to log into Windows 10.
