Don’t want audio in your video file? Here is how to remove audio from video in Windows 10 without installing additional software.

Generally, audio accompanies videos. This is especially true if you shot a video with a video or phone camera or downloaded it from the internet. Under certain circumstances, you might want to remove audio from a video file. There may be many reasons for this, like privacy, removing copyright material, etc.

You don’t have to use complicated video editing software like Premier or DaVinci to remove audio from video. You can do it with the built-in Windows 10 Video Editor or even the VLC media player.

This quick and easy Windows guide will show you how to altogether remove audio from a video using simple software. Follow the steps as is, and it will be done in no time.

Remove audio from video

Follow one of the below methods to remove audio from video in Windows.

  1. Use built-in Video Editor
  2. With VLC media player

Note: I assume the video you want to modify is available on your computer.

Use built-in Video Editor to remove audio

Windows 10 comes with a built-in video editor that lets you do basic edits on any video file. These edits include adding or removing background music, adding special effects, cutting and copying clips, etc. We can use the Video Editor software to easily remove the audio from a video file with just a few clicks. The best thing is, you don’t have to install any additional software whatsoever.

The first thing we need to do is open the Video Editor application. To do that, press the Start (Windows) key on your keyboard and search for “Video Editor.” Click on the appropriate result to open the Video Editor application.

After opening the Video Editor, click the “New video project” button.

Name the video project anything you want and click the “Ok” button.

Now, click the “Add > From this PC” option. This option lets you add a video file to the editor.

Go to where the video file is stored, select it, and click the “Open” button.

The above action will add the video file to the “Project Library” section.

Now, drag the video file and drop it in the first card of the Storyboard section. You can also do the same thing by right-clicking on the video in the Project Library section and selecting the “Place in Storyboard” option.

After adding the video file to the storyboard, press the volume icon on the video card and use the slider to set it to “zero.”

Next, click on the “Finish video” button appearing in the top right corner.

You are prompted to select the video quality; if you know what the original video quality is, choose it. Otherwise, select the highest possible quality from the dropdown menu. You can also set advanced options by clicking on the “More options” link. Once done, click the “Export” button.

Type a name for the new video file, select a location, and click the “Export” button.

As soon as you click the button, the Video Editor application will start the Export process. Depending on the video quality and length, it will take some time to complete the export.

Once done, you can find the newly exported file in the location you chose. Windows will automatically play the freshly exported file so that you can see if everything is alright.

Use VLC to remove audio from video file

VLC lets you remove audio from video using the Convert feature. Here is how to do it.

Open the VLC Media Player by searching for it in the Start menu or double-clicking on the desktop shortcut. After opening it, click the “File > Convert/Save” option.

Now, select the “File” tab in the Open Media window and click the “Add” button.

Find the video file you want to remove the audio, select it, and click the “Open” button.

Select the “Convert” option from the “Convert / Save” dropdown menu.

Here, select the “Convert” option. Next, select “Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4)” from the Profile dropdown. If you prefer some other video format, you can choose that too.

After selecting the video profile, click the “Settings” button next to the dropdown menu.

Go to the “Video codec” tab and select the “Keep the original track” checkbox.

Go to the “Audio codec” tab and uncheck the “Audio” checkbox. Click the “Save” button to confirm the changes.

Now, click the “Browse” button in the Convert window.

Type a name for the file, go to the location where you want to save the file, and click the “Save” button.

Press the “Start” button in the Convert window.

As soon as you click the button, VLC will start removing audio from the video.

Once done, the file is automatically saved to the location you chose earlier.

That is it. As you can see, it is straightforward to remove audio from a video in Windows.
