Don’t like the taskbar’s bottom position? Here is a simple trick to move the taskbar to the top of the screen in the Windows 11 operating system.
Windows 11’s taskbar has changed a lot compared to Windows 10. The Start menu is primarily centered, the icons are updated, system icons and notification buttons and icons got a pleasant yet straightforward redesign and more. All in all, the new taskbar is a much-needed improvement.
That being said, with all the improvements, there are some not-so-good downgrades too. These include but are not limited to the removal of right-click options, inability to drag and drop files and apps, inability to move the taskbar’s position from the bottom, etc.
If you remember, you can move the taskbar from the bottom to the top, left, or right positions. Though not many use the option to move the taskbar position, it is still pretty useful. Especially for power users who like to customize the operating system’s look and feel. For example, I’ve seen many who moved the taskbar to the top of the screen just because they don’t like the bottom position.
Though Microsoft removed the option, you can still move the taskbar position to the top of the screen using a registry trick. All you have to do is modify a single value, and you are good to go.
So, this easy Windows 11 guide will show you how to move the taskbar to the top of the screen without further ado.
Move the taskbar to the top of the screen
To move the taskbar to the top of the screen from the bottom, we have to edit the registry. It is pretty easy to do. However, I recommend you back up the registry before editing it to be on the safe side.
- Get the reg file from here.
- Open the zip file.
- Extract the .reg files to the desktop.
- Right-click on the “move_win11_taskbar_top.reg” file and select “Show more options.”
- Select the “Merge” option.
- Click “Yes.”
- Press “Ok.”
- Restart the computer.
- With that, the taskbar is moved to the top of the screen.
Detailed steps (manual method):
Note: For this specific task, editing the registry value is a bit tricky and confusing. So, only follow if you are comfortable with that. Otherwise, follow the above steps, download the .reg file, and execute it. It is much easier and does the same thing.
The first thing to do is open the registry. To do that, search for “Registry Editor” in the Start menu and click on the top result. After opening the Registry Editor, paste the below path in the address bar and press Enter.
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\StuckRects3
Now, find and double-click on the “Settings” value.
The above action will open the Edit Binary Value window. Here, find the fifth value in the top second row. By default, it should say “03,” which means “Bottom.” Now, put your mouse cursor to the right of the value and click. This will place the text cursor where we want.
After that, press the Backspace key once and type “01” immediately. Refer to the below image to see how it looks once you are done. Click the “Ok” button to save changes.
Close the registry editor and reboot Windows 11.
After rebooting, the taskbar will be moved to the top of the screen.
Move the taskbar to the bottom of the screen
To restore or move the taskbar to the bottom of the screen, follow the below steps.
- Get the reg file from here.
- Open the zip file.
- Extract the .reg files to the desktop.
- Right-click on the “move_win11_taskbar_bottom.reg” file and select “Show more options.”
- Select the “Merge” option.
- Click “Yes.”
- Press “Ok.”
- Restart the computer.
- With that, the taskbar is moved to the bottom of the screen.
