Wondering what your computer’s IP address is? Here are some simple steps you can follow to find the IP address in use in Windows 10.
When connected to a network, your computer or laptop automatically gets an IP address. In simple terms, the IP address is what differentiates your connection to the network from other connections. The IP address of your computer can be a static IP address or a dynamic IP address. In general day-to-day usage, most users never need to know the IP address. After all, Windows 10 and the network will take care of all the bits and pieces.
However, there will be times where you need to know the IP address of Windows 10. For example, maybe you are trying to connect to your computer via another device, set up a network share, or add custom settings in the router. In those kinds of cases, you have to find the IP address in Windows 10 manually.
The good thing is, Windows 10 makes it easy to find the IP address. There are several different ways to know what IP address you are using in Windows 10.
In this quick and straightforward Windows 10 how-to guide, I will show three different methods you can use to find the IP address in Windows 10. Follow the one you like.
Before proceeding with the steps, the system is connected to the network.
Find IP Address from Windows 10 Settings
The easiest way to find the IP address in Windows 10 is via the Network options page in the Settings app. Here is how.
- Click on the network icon on the taskbar.
- Click on the connected network.
- Mouse click on the “Properties” link.
- Scroll down to find the Properties section.
- You will see the IP address next to the “IPv4 address” heading.
- With that, you now know the Windows 10 IP address.
First, click on the “Network” icon on the taskbar. After that, click on the active network connection. In my case, I’m connected to the “Asura 5G” network. Now, click on the “Properties” link. You can also open the same network properties page by going to the “Settings -> Network & Internet -> Status” and clicking on the “Properties” button.
On the properties page, scroll down till you find the Properties section. You will see your current IP address right next to the “IPv4 address” heading. If you are connected to an IPv6 network, you will find its address next to the “IPv6 address” heading.
You can select the IP address with your mouse pointer and press “Ctrl + C” to copy.
Command to get the IP address in Windows 10
You can use the ipconfig command to get the IP address in Windows 10. Here is how.
- Open the Command Prompt window.
- Type “ipconfig /all” and press Enter.
- Find the network adapter you are using.
- The IP address will be next to the “IPv4 address” heading.
- If needed, you can select the IP address and copy it.
First, open the Start menu, search for “Command Prompt,” and click on it. This action will open the Command Prompt window. In the Command Prompt window, type the “ipconfig /all” command and press Enter.
As soon as you do that, it will list all the available network adapters and their connection statuses. From the list, find your network adapter. You can easily recognize it with the “Wi-Fi” in the network adapter name if you are using Wi-Fi.
Once you know the network adapter, you will see the IP address next to the “IPv4 address” heading.
Find IP Address from Control Panel
You can use the Control Panel’s Network Adapter properties to find the IP address of your computer. Here is how.
- Open the Start menu.
- Search and open “Control Panel.”
- Set the “View by” to “Large icons.”
- Click on “Network and Sharing Center.”
- Now, click on the network name next to “Connections” under the “View your active connections” section.
- Click on the “Details” button.
- You will find the IP address next to the “IPv4 address” heading.
- With that, you now know the IP address of your computer.
That is all. It is that simple to find the IP address in Windows 10.
Local and Public IP Addresses
Remember that you will see a local IP address as your computer IP address if you are connected to a router or mobile hotspot network. In case you don’t know, local IP addresses are not public-facing IP addresses. That means you cannot use them to connect to your computer over the internet. Any IP address that falls in the 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, or 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255 range are local IP addresses. For example, in all the screenshots I added, my IP address is in the 192.168.x.x range. It means that I’m using a local IP address.
If you want to know the actual public-facing IP address. i.e., the IP address given by your ISP (Internet Service Provider), do a Google or Bing search for “What is my IP address.” Alternatively, you can also find it by contacting your ISP.
I hope that helps.
