Wondering what your computer’s IP address is? Here are some simple steps you can follow to find the IP address in use in Windows 10.

When connected to a network, your computer or laptop automatically gets an IP address. In simple terms, the IP address is what differentiates your connection to the network from other connections. The IP address of your computer can be a static IP address or a dynamic IP address. In general day-to-day usage, most users never need to know the IP address. After all, Windows 10 and the network will take care of all the bits and pieces.

However, there will be times where you need to know the IP address of Windows 10. For example, maybe you are trying to connect to your computer via another device, set up a network share, or add custom settings in the router. In those kinds of cases, you have to find the IP address in Windows 10 manually.

The good thing is, Windows 10 makes it easy to find the IP address. There are several different ways to know what IP address you are using in Windows 10.

Local and Public IP Addresses

Remember that you will see a local IP address as your computer IP address if you are connected to a router or mobile hotspot network. In case you don’t know, local IP addresses are not public-facing IP addresses. That means you cannot use them to connect to your computer over the internet. Any IP address that falls in the 10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255, or 192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255 range are local IP addresses. For example, in all the screenshots I added, my IP address is in the 192.168.x.x range. It means that I’m using a local IP address.

If you want to know the actual public-facing IP address. i.e., the IP address given by your ISP (Internet Service Provider), do a Google or Bing search for “What is my IP address.” Alternatively, you can also find it by contacting your ISP.

I hope that helps.
