How To Change Page Background in MS Word

By default, Word shows a simple white background for pages. If you are using the dark mode, you will see a dark background. In a vast majority of cases, a simple white or dark background is sufficient. However, that’s not the case for everyone or every time. For example, if you are creating a fun and creative document, you might want to change your background in MS Word. If you are making a broacher, you might want to add an image as the page background in MS Word.

Change page background color in MS Word

We can use the Page Color option to change the page background in MS Word. Here is where to find the option and how to use it.

Step 1: Open the Word document for which you want to change the background.

Step 2: After opening the Word document. Click on the “Design” tab on the ribbon menu.

Step 3: Now, click the “Page Color” option and select the color you want to apply. As you hover over the color, Word will instantly show a preview of the background color.

Step 4: To set a custom color, select the “More Colors” option.

Step 5: Next, go to the “Custom” tab, select the color you want to set and click the “Ok” button.

That is it. It is that simple to set a background color in Word.

Select the “Design > Page Color > No Color” option to remove the background color in Word.

Use image as page background in MS Word

You can set an image or picture as a page background using the Insert Picture option. Make sure the image has proper dimensions. For example, if you want the image to cover the entire page, it should have the same width and height ratio to make sure the picture doesn’t deform.

Step 1: Open the Word document you want to set a custom image as the background.

Step 2: Add all the text you want to write.

Step 3: Go to the “Insert” tab in the top ribbon menu.

Step 4: Now, click on the “Picture” option, then select the “This PC” option.

Step 5: Find the image or picture you want to set as the background, select it, and click the “Insert” button.

Step 6: The above action will add the image to the Word document. Now, select the “Picture Format” tab, click on the “Wrap Text” option, and then select the “Behind Text” option. This will move the image behind the next.

Step 7: If needed, you can fix the image position and resize it to fit the page. To do that, select the “Fix Position on Page” option from the Wrap Text menu.

Step 8: Drag the image to fix its position on the page. You can also drag the corners of the image to resize it as needed.
