How to Change Your Administrator Account Name in Windows 11 & 10

Finding yourself wanting to change the administrator account name on your Windows PC? Maybe you made a type during setup, or perhaps want a name that’s suits your specific context or current use.

By default, Windows lets you set the name for your primary administrator account while creating a new user account or installing the OS. If you are logging in with a Microsoft account, Windows uses the MS account name as the user account name.

Thankfully, if you ever need it, you can easily change the name of your administrator account with just a few clicks. In this tutorial, I will show you the steps to rename your administrator account in Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Changing Administrator Name Using Microsoft Account

If you are using a Microsoft account to log into your administrator account, have to change the name in your Microsoft account. Once changed, that name will reflect in your PC. Here’s how to do it.

  1. Open Settings by pressing “Windows key + I”.
  2. Go to “Accounts” > “Your Info“.
  3. Click the “Accounts” or “Manage my Microsoft Account” option.
  4. Log into your Microsoft account.
  5. Select “Your Info” from the sidebar.
  6. Click “Edit name” on the right page.
  7. Type the new name and click “Save“.
  8. With that, you’ve renamed the administrator account name.

Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)

First, press “Windows key + I” to open Settings. Once it opens, go to the “Accounts” page and click the “Your info” option.

On the right page, click the “Accounts” option under the “Account settings” section. Windows 10 users should click the “Manage my Microsoft Account” option.

The above action open the Microsoft Account settings page in your default browser. When prompted, log int your MS account to follow along.

After logging in, click “Your info” on the sidebar. This takes you to the page where you edit your personal info such as the name.

On the right side of the “Your info” page, click the “Edit name” option next to your name.

Now, type the name in the “First name” and “Last name” fields, type the captcha, and click the “Save” button.

That is it. With that, you’ve renamed the administrator name in Windows. The new name should appear anywhere your name appears in Windows. If not, restart your system and you will see the modified name.

Changing Administrator Account Name Using Netplwiz (for Local Accounts)

If you are using a local administrator account, you must use the netplwiz tool to rename the administrator account. Here’s how.

  1. Open the Run dialog using “Windows key + R”.
  2. Type “netplwiz” and click “OK“.
  3. Select the administrator account and click “Properties“.

  4. Type a name in the “Full name” field.
  5. Click “OK“.

  6. When prompted, click “OK” to sign out.
  7. Sign-in and the administrator account is renamed.

That is all. You are done with the admin name change. The new name will appear as soon as you sign-in.

Note: If you’ve enabled the hidden administrator account, you can follow the same steps as shown in the second method to change its name.

    I ran netplwiz and all the selections are greyed out, I even restarted in safe mode with the same result. I still wish to change the administrator’s name.
