How to Zoom in and out in Command Prompt and PowerShell

The new Command Prompt and PowerShell apps in Windows 10 now allows zoom in and zoom out functionality. Here’s how you can use it.

Microsoft is slowly but surely adding new usability features to the Command Prompt and PowerShell. One of those features is the ability to zoom in and out in the Command Prompt and PowerShell. For example, when using the Command Prompt or PowerShell, if you want to see bigger text, you can just change the text size within the properties window.

It is nothing hard, right-click on the Command Prompt or PowerShell window, select Properties and then you can change the text size from there.

But wouldn’t it be nice to have a simple keyboard shortcut to zoom in and zoom out in Command Prompt or PowerShell consoles. That is what Microsoft added in the new Windows 10 build.

Zoom in and Zoom out in Command Prompt & PowerShell

Start from Windows 10 18272 build, you can zoom in and out in any console Windows like Command Prompt or PowerShell using Ctrl + Scroll wheel.

To zoom in Command Prompt or PowerShell, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Scroll wheel UP.  To zoom out in Command Prompt or PowerShell, use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Scroll wheel DOWN.

You can see it in action below. The GIF image may take some time to load, it’s around 2MB.

Additionally, a dark scrollbar is also added to the console which appears when you enable dark mode in the settings app.

Hope that helps. This is a very small feature, but it sure is helpful when you want to quickly zoom in and out in the Command Prompt or PowerShell.
