Microsoft Edge has a nifty little feature called Startup Boost that makes it launch faster. When enabled, Startup Boost will automatically preload core Microsoft Edge components and keep them running in the background. This means when you launch Edge, it’s ready to go almost instantly.
If you are looking to make your browsing experience faster and snappier, you need to turn on Startup Boost in Microsoft Edge. It’s like having your browser pre-warmed and waiting for you. Of course, if you’re not a frequent Edge user or prefer to minimize background processes, you can easily turn off Startup Boost. In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through the process of enabling or disabling Startup Boost in Microsoft Edge. It’s a simple tweak that can make a noticeable difference in your daily browsing. Let’s get started.
How to Turn On Startup Boost in Microsoft Edge
Turning on Microsoft Edge Startup Boost loads core components in the background and keeps them running in a minimal state so that the browser can launch faster. Follow these steps to enable Edge Startup Boost.
- Press the Start button on the taskbar.
- Search and open Microsoft Edge.
- Click the three dots icon on the top-right corner.
- Select the “Settings” option.
- Go to the “System & Performance” tab on the sidebar.
- Turn ON the Startup Boost toggle.
- With that, Edge Startup Boost is enabled.
Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)
First, open the Edge browser. In Windows, you can open the Edge browser by searching for it in the Start menu. Alternatively, click the Edge icon on the taskbar if you’ve pinned it there.
Once the browser opens, click the three dots icon on the top-right corner to open the Edge menu. Select the “Settings” option in the menu.
In the Settings tab, click the “System & Performance” tab on the sidebar. In this tab, turn ON the Startup Boost toggle on the right panel.
As soon as you turn on the toggle, Edge Startup Boost is enabled. From now on, all core components of Edge will run in the background making it launch faster.
Note: If you frequently open and close the browser window and use a lot of extensions, optionally, turn ON the “Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed” toggle. That way, extensions will also run in the background and they won’t have to load from the start every time you open the browser.
How to Turn OFF Startup Boost in Edge Browser
If you don’t use Microsoft Edge that often, don’t want Edge or its components running in the background, or have limited system resources, you should turn off the Startup Boost feature in Edge. Here’s how to do it.
- Open the Edge browser.
- Click the three dots menu icon on the top-right corner.
- Select the “Settings” option.
- Select the “System & Performance” tab on the sidebar.
- Turn OFF the “Startup Boost” toggle.
Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)
Click the Edge icon on your taskbar or search for Microsoft Edge in the Start menu and click Open to launch the Edge browser. Once it opens, click the three dots menu icon on the top-right corner of the Edge window. From the menu, click the Settings option.

Wrapping —Toggling Microsoft Edge Startup Boost Feature
As you can see, for Edge users, Startup Boost is an awesome feature that makes your browser launch faster and snappier. If you close and open your browser multiple times a day, I also recommend you enable the option to allow extensions to run in the background. That way, your extension doesn’t have to load from the start every time you open the Edge browser.
On the other hand, if you are not an edge browser user or don’t want it running in the background, turn off the Startup Boost feature as shown above.
