How to Resize Windows 10 Start menu (Make it smaller/bigger)

You can make the Start menu look narrower or enlarge it to fit more tiles. Here are the steps to resize the Start menu in Windows 10.

In Windows 10, Microsoft improved it from how it looked like in Windows 8. The new Windows 10 Start menu gave us the best of both worlds. i.e, a smaller Start menu with app list and live tiles. With each new Windows 10 version, Microsoft further improved the look and feel of the Start menu. One of those improvements is the ability to resize the Start menu. You can either enlarge or increase the Start menu size or make the Start menu look narrower by decreasing its size.

For example, when working on smaller screens like laptops, having a narrower Start menu will make more sense. For instance, on my laptop, I resized the Start menu to only display the apps list and hide all the tiles. On the other hand, if you have a wide monitor with a lot of screen real estate, you can enlarge the Start menu size to add more tiles. That way, you never have to search for a program in the Start menu ever again.

So, to put it simply, you can either increase or decrease the Start menu size in Windows 10.

In this simple Windows 10 guide, let me show how you can resize the Start menu in Windows 10.

Resize the Start menu in Windows 10

To resize the Start menu in Windows 10, follow the steps below.

To increase the Start menu size, place the mouse pointer at the top right corner until it turns to the resize cursor (⤢). Next, click and drag the mouse in the up, right, or outward diagonal direction. This action will simultaneously increase both the horizontal and vertical sizes.

If you just want to increase the Start menu size either horizontally or vertically, place the mouse cursor on the top or right edge of the Start menu and drag it outwards.

increase Start menu size vertically

To decrease the Start menu height, place the mouse pointer at the top edge of the Start menu until it turns to the vertical resize cursor (↕) and hold & drag it downwards.

decrease Start menu size vertically

The process to decrease the Start menu width is a bit different. First, you need to delete all the pinned tiles. To do that, right-click on a tile and select the “Unpin from Start” option. Do this for all the tiles. Next, place the mouse pointer on the right edge of the Start menu until it turns to the horizontal resize cursor (⟷) and hold & drag it to the left side. This action will reduce the Start menu horizontal size.
