How to Remove ‘Sleep’ Option from Windows 10 Start Menu

Remove sleep option from start menu - featured

If your computer doesn’t support HybridSleep and you have a habit of turning off the computer after putting it into sleep mode then the default sleep option in the start menu is not that useful. The good thing is, you can remove it. Follow the below steps to remove Sleep option from the start menu in Windows 10.

Removing sleep option from the start menu also helps when you don’t want other users to put your system into sleep mode. Unlike the systems that support HybridSleep, the regular sleep mode doesn’t store the system state. Which means that if you cut off the power, the computer will cold boot.

Remove Sleep Option from Start Menu

The control panel has a built-in option to remove the Sleep option from the start menu. All you have to do is uncheck a checkbox and you are done.

1. Open the PC Settings app with the keyboard shortcut Win + I. Next, Go to the “System -> Power & Sleep” page.

2. On the right panel, click on the “Additional Power Settings” link under the Related Settings section.

3. The above action will open the Power Options control panel window. Here, click on the “Choose what the power buttons do” link appearing on the left panel.

4. By default, you are prevented from changing the shutdown settings. So, click on the “Change settings that are currently unavailable” link to enable those options.

5. Next, uncheck the checkbox before “Sleep” option and click on the “Save Changes” button.

The changes are instant. As soon as you disable the sleep option, it will be removed from the start menu, power user menu and from the Alt + F4 menu too.

(Alternative) Group Policy Method

As an alternative, you can also use the Group Policy editor to remove sleep option.

1. Open group policy editor by searching for “Edit Group Policy” in the start menu.

2. In the Group Policy editor, go to the “Computer Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> File Explorer” folder.

3. On the right panel, find and double-click on the “Show sleep in the power options menu” policy to change it.

4. In the policy properties window, select the “Disabled” option to stop showing sleep option in the start menu. Click on the “Apply” and “Ok” buttons to save the changes.

5. Finally, reboot Windows and you will no longer see the sleep option.

If you ever want to add sleep option to the start menu, select “Enabled” or “Not Configured” option in step 4, save changes and reboot.

(Alternative) Registry Method (for Windows 10 Home users)

If you are using Windows 10 Home edition then you have to use the Registry Editor. This is because you won’t have access to the Group Policy editor.

1. Open registry editor by searching for “Registry Editor” in the start menu.

2. In the registry editor, copy the below path, paste it in the address bar and press Enter. You will be instantly taken to the folder where you need to create a new value.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FlyoutMenuSettings

3. On the right-panel, right-click on the empty space and select “New -> DWORD (32-bit) Value” option. Name the new value as “ShowSleepOption“.

4. Double-click on the newly created value and set the value data to “0” and click on the “Ok” button.

5. Finally, reboot Windows and you will no longer see the sleep option.

If you ever want to add sleep option to the start menu, either change the value data in step 4 to “1” or delete the “ShowSleepOption” value.

That is it.
