Like me, if you are using 7-Zip to open and create ZIP files, you might be seeing a new option called “CRC SHA” in the right-click context menu. If you don’t like it, follow the below steps to remove CRC SHA from the context menu in Windows 10.
7-Zip is one of the most useful tools for Windows. In fact, it is one of the first tools that I install after installing or reinstall Windows 10. One of the best things about 7-zip is that it is free and open-source. Of course, unlike the built-in ZIP functionality, 7-Zip can compress files to their smallest size.
When you install 7-Zip, it adds quite a few context menu options. Those options include 7-Zip and CRC SHA. These options, in turn, contain a few other options to make your life easier. As good as it is, I’ve never used the CRC SHA functionality. As such, it is just a waste of context menu space. So, if you’ve never used the CRC SHA option, here’s how to remove it from the context menu.
Remove CRC SHA from Context Menu
Thankfully, you don’t have to edit the registry or make changes to system files. 7-Zip provides you the options to pick and choose what options you see in the context menu. So, it’s pretty easy to remove CRC SHA from the right-click context menu.
1. First, open 7-ZIP by searching for “7-Zip File Manager” in the start menu.
2. In the 7-Zip window, select “Tools -> Options” option. This is where all the 7-Zip settings are stored.
3. As soon as the Options window has been opened, go to the “7-Zip” tab. Here, uncheck the CRC SHA checkbox and click on the “Apply” and “Ok” buttons to save changes.
4. That is it. No reboot required. The CRC SHA option is removed. If you right-click on any folder or file, you will no longer see the CRC SHA option.
If you ever want to re-enable the option, just select the CRC SHA checkbox in step 4 and you are good to go.
What is CRC SHA?
CRC SHA (Cyclic Redundancy Check, Secure Hash Algorithm) is generally used to check the integrity of a file. For example, if you’ve downloaded a file from the internet, you can use the CRC SHA feature to generate a hash code for that file. You can then compare the hash code from the developer with the hash generated by 7-Zip. If both the hash codes are same then the file is not modified.
If the file content is modified in any way, even if it is a teeny tiny change, the hash code is automatically changed. When the hash code doesn’t match, you can be sure that the file is tampered with.
The good thing about this feature is that if you are sending confidential files then generating and adding the hash code is pretty helpful. Once received, the other party can easily cross-check the hash code to verify the file integrity.
