Learn how to exclude specific sites from Chrome’s Memory Saver to keep important tabs always active and prevent them from being put to sleep.
Google Chrome has an incredible feature called Memory Saver that automatically deactivates or puts inactive tabs to sleep after a specific period. That way, it frees up the system memory. While this feature is fantastic at saving your system memory, there might be situations where you want specific tabs or sites to never become inactive or put to sleep. For example, Discord, Google Sheets, media sites, etc. In those cases, you don’t have to turn off the memory saver feature. Instead, you can exclude those sites so that Chrome won’t put them to sleep.
In this guide, I will show you the steps to stop Google Chrome from putting specific sites (tabs) to sleep in simple steps. Let’s get started.
Keep Specific Chrome Tabs Always Active (Memory Saver)
- Open the Chrome browser.
- Click the “Menu” icon (three vertical dots) on the top right corner.
- Select “Settings“.
- Go to the “Performance” tab.
- Click “Add” next to “Always keep these sites active”.
- Go to the “Add sites manually” tab.
- Type the URL of the website and click “Add“.
- With that, that specific site will always stay active, and memory won’t be freed up.
Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)
First, click the “Menu” icon (three vertical dots) on the top right corner and then select the “Settings” option. Alternatively, you can also type “chrome://settings” in the address bar and press “Enter”. This opens the Settings tab in your browser.
Note: If the Chrome browser is not yet open, press the “Windows key”, search for “Google Chrome”, and click “Open”.

In the Settings tab, go to the “Performance” tab on the sidebar. On the right pane, click the “Add” button next to “Always keep these sites active” under the “General” section.

This opens a new dialog. If the site/tab you want to keep active is currently open, select it under the “Add current sites” tab and click the “Add” button.

If the site you want to always keep active is not open, go to the “Add sites manually” tab, type the URL in the “Site” field, and click “Add“. If you have more than one site, follow the same step to add more.

That is all. With that, you’ve excluded sites you don’t want Chrome to put to sleep or deactivate to free up memory. If you have any questions or need help, comment below. I’ll be happy to assist.
