How To Remove ‘Tab Search’ Icon in Google Chrome Title Bar

Don’t like the new ‘tab search’ icon on the title bar? Here are two simple methods to quickly remove or hide the ‘tab search’ icon in Google Chrome.

With a recent update, Google added a new feature called Tab Search that lets you easily search for any open tabs and open them quickly. This new feature adds a button icon to the left of the Chrome title bar. Clicking it opens a search bar where you can type to search for open tabs, and you use the arrow keys to select and navigate to that tab. As you can guess, if you are like me who juggle with a lot of open tabs, the new tab search feature is pretty helpful.

While the new tab search icon is pretty helpful, removing it if you don’t use it is better. Mainly because it gives back the space occupied by the icon itself. This is very helpful for smaller screens like laptops. Thankfully, it is pretty easy to remove the Tab Search icon in Google Chrome. You can either simply unpin it from the title bar or turn it off using Chrome settings. In this guide, I will show both methods. Let’s get started.

Before You Start

• You should be using Google Chrome v147.0.7727 or higher to follow the steps below.

Unpin ‘Tab Search’ Icon to Remove it in Google Chrome

1. First, open the Chrome browser.
2. In the top-left corner, right-click the “Tab Search” icon.
3. Select the “Unpin” option.
4. With that, the “Tab Search” icon is removed in Google Chrome.

Remove ‘Tab Search’ Icon in Google Chrome Using Settings

Alternatively, you can use the Settings tab in Chrome to remove the ‘Tab Search’ icon from the title bar. Here’s how:

1. First, open the Start menu.
2. Search and open “Google Chrome” from the Start menu.
3. Click the “Menu” icon (three vertical dots) in the top-right corner.
4. Select the “Settings” option.
5. Go to the “Appearance” tab on the sidebar.
6. Turn OFF the “Show tab search button” toggle.
7. As soon as you do that, the tab search icon button is removed instantly.

If you ever want to show the tab search icon, follow the same steps as above, but turn ON the “Show tab search button” toggle.
