Learn how to easily measure and check your computer’s boot time in seconds on Windows 11 and 10.
Generally, most modern Windows systems, especially those with an SSD and fast boot enabled, will boot very quickly. Often less than 10 seconds. But have you ever measured your computer’s actual startup time, down to the second? Measuring the boot-up or startup time helps you optimize your PC without sacrificing functionality.
For instance, the startup time can increase significantly depending on the number of startup applications, services, and other tasks. However, not every startup item is equally responsible for the delayed startup time. By measuring your boot speed before and after making changes, you can identify which apps, services, or tasks are causing the most delay.
In this quick and easy guide, I will show you the steps to measure your PC’s boot speed in seconds on Windows 11 and Windows 10. Let’s get started.
Before You Start
- Administrative rights are required to measure the boot time of your PC.

Steps to Measure Boot Speed in Windows 11 & 10
To calculate the boot time, we will use a free app called BootRacer. Here’s how:
First, go to the official website and download BootRacer by clicking the Download button. After that, right-click the downloaded file in the File Explorer and select the “Extract All” option.
Click the “Extract” button to extract the ZIP file to a new folder in the same directory as the ZIP file.
After extracting, open the extracted folder and double-click the “BootRacerSetup.exe” file to start the installation process. Follow the installation wizard.
At the end of the installation wizard, ensure all the checkboxes are selected and click the “Finish” button.
Once the installation is done, open the Start menu, search for “BootRacer“, and click “Open” to launch the application. After opening it, go to the “Full Boot Test” tab on the sidebar.
Ensure you are in the “Quick Speedup” tab and click the “Start Test” button next to “Perform a full boot time test”.
Click the “Yes” button to continue.
As soon as you do that, your PC restarts. After that, the BootRacer tool displays the time it took to fully boot your PC. For instance, my PC (a virtual machine) took 53 seconds. Click the “Know more” button.
It displays the detailed timeline of the entire boot process. For instance, in my case, although Windows booted quickly, the startup apps and services that started after logging in took 40 seconds.
You can now use this information to make necessary changes to the startup times to improve the boot time. Don’t forget to measure the startup time after making the changes.
