How To Know Number of RAM Slots in Laptop and Desktop

Using the Task Manager, you can know the number of RAM (memory) slots your laptop or desktop has and the number of used/empty slots. Here’s how.

Most laptops and almost all desktops have multiple RAM slots. However, in most cases, half of the slots are already filled when you buy the system. If you are trying to replace or add more RAM to your system as part of the hardware upgrade process, apart from knowing the RAM type (DDR3, DDR4, or DDR5), you must also know the total number of RAM slots in your system, how many are already filled, and how many are empty. Thankfully, Windows makes it quite easy.

In this tutorial, I’ll show how to know the number of RAM slots in your system and how many slots are in use using the Task Manager. Let’s get started.

Know the Number of RAM Slots in Your System

  1. Right-click on the taskbar.
  2. Select the “Task Manager” option.
  3. Go to the “Performance” tab.
  4. Select the “Memory” option.
  5. You will see the user and total number of RAM slots next to “Slots used“.

Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)

First, open the Task Manager tool. To do that, press the “Ctrl + Shift + Esc” shortcut or right-click on the taskbar and select the “Task Manager” option.

open task manager

Once the task manager opens, select the “Performance” tab and then click the “Memory” tab in the center panel. This shows a variety of things about your memory such as the usage graph, in use & available memory, paged & non-paged pool, etc.

At the bottom, you will see the number of used slots and the number of total slots next to “Slots used“. For example, you can see that the image below has “Slots used: 1 of 4”. That means, the system has four RAM slots of which one is in use, i.e., one RAM slot has a RAM/memory stick in it.
