By default, Windows 11 plays a notification sound whenever there is a new alert, such as a message, system event, or app notification. While helpful in getting your attention, these sounds can be distracting, especially if you get too many notifications. Thankfully, you can easily disable the notification sound for all apps or specific apps as needed.
For example, Greenshot, one of my favorite screenshot apps, displays a notification every time a screenshot is saved. While the notification helps let me know that the screenshot is saved successfully, the accompanying sound is distracting and irritating to hear multiple times. So, I muted the notification sound for all apps, including Greenshot.
If you also find notification sounds distracting, follow these steps to turn off the notification sound for all or specific apps in Windows 11. Let’s get started.

- Press “Windows key + I” to open Settings.
- Navigate to the “System” tab on the sidebar.
- Click the “Notifications” option.
- Scroll down the right page and click the app of your choice.
- Turn OFF the “Play a sound when a notification arrives” toggle.
- With that, the notification sound from that specific app is muted.
Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)
As always, open the Settings window by pressing the “Windows key + I” shortcut. Next, navigate to the “System” tab and click the “Notifications” option on the right page.

Scroll down the right page and click the app for which you want to mute the notification sound. For example, I’m clicking on WhatsApp. This opens the notification options for that specific app.

Here, turn OFF the “Play a sound when a notification arrives” toggle. This action disables notification sound from the selected app. You can close the Settings app.

Wrapping Up — Muting Notifications Sound in Windows 11
