Almost every laptop comes with at least one speaker. However, the most common configuration is to have two speakers for stereo effect. One of the main reasons for including speakers in a laptop is that it allows the operating system to convey notifications and other events in audio form. Not only that but the internal speakers are also used as an assistive tech for differentially abled people. Of course, the other common use case is consuming media.
Though laptop speakers are useful for a vast majority of Windows users, there might be situations where you need to disable them. There may be any number of reasons like, not liking how the laptop speakers sound, faulty speakers, privacy reasons, etc. No matter the reason, Windows lets you easily disable laptop speakers from the Sound Settings page in the Setting app. All you have to do is find the laptop speaker device and turn it off.
In this quick and simple Windows 10 guide, let me show you the steps to completely disable laptop speakers in Windows 10.
Important note: The steps shown below are only applicable to Windows 10. If you are on Windows 7, use the control panel to turn off laptop speakers.
Steps to disable laptop speakers
Every sound output device attached to your laptop, be it the internal speakers, headphones (wired or wireless), or external speakers appear as separate sound devices. This makes it possible to isolate laptop speakers and disable them individually. That way, you can still use other sound output devices like headphones, external speakers, etc., even after disabling internal laptop speakers.
Important note: If you have connected multiple sound output devices to the laptop, like external speakers, wired or wireless headphones, etc., I recommend you disconnect them temporarily to reduce confusion.
- Open the Settings app in Windows 10.
- Select the “System” option.
- Select on the “Sound” tab on the sidebar.
- Click on “Manage sound devices” under the Output section.
- Click on the laptop speaker’s entry.
- Press the “Disable” button.
- Laptop speakers are now disabled.
First, open the Windows 10 Settings app with the “Start key + I” shortcut. You can also search for “Settings” in the Start menu and open it from there. After opening the Settings app, go to the “System -> Sound” page.
In the Sound page, click on the “Manage sound devices” link under the Output section. This is where you will find all the settings related to the sound devices.
Now, click on the laptop speaker’s entry. If you have multiple sound output devices and cannot recognize which output device is the laptop speaker, disconnect all other speaker devices to narrow down the selection.
Click on the “Disable” button. This action will disable the laptop speakers.
That is all. It is that simple to turn off laptop speakers in Windows 10. As I said before, you only disabled the laptop speakers, all other sound output devices will work normally.
