How To Disable JavaScript Optimization in Chrome (For Security)

Learn how to quick and easily disable the JavaScript optimization feature in the Google Chrome browser to improve security.

Most don’t know this but Google Chrome has a built-in feature called JavaScript Optimization that uses Just-In-Time process to improve your browsing speed. While this is a good thing, it can also lead to security vulnerabilities in Chrome. Moreover, unless you have a pretty old computer, the JavaScript performance optimization provided by this feature in pretty miniscule. To put it simply, the level of optimization provided by this feature is not worth the downgrade in security. As such, it is generally recommended to disable the JavaScript Optimization feature in Chrome.

In this guide, I will show how to turn off the JavaScript Optimization feature in Chrome via its settings. Let’s get started.

  1. Press the “Windows key” to launch the Start menu.
  2. Search for “Google Chrome” and click “Open“.
  3. Click the “Menu” icon on the top-right corner.
  4. Select “Settings“.
  5. Go to the “Privacy and Security” tab on the sidebar.
  6. Click “Security“.
  7. Click “Manage JavaScript optimization & security“.
  8. Select the “Don’t allow sites to use JavaScript optimization” option.
  9. With that, you’ve disable JavaScript optimization in Google Chrome.

Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)

First, open the Chrome browser if it isn’t already. To open it, search for “Google Chrome” in the Start menu, and click “Open”. In the Chrome browser, click the “Menu” icon (three vertical dots) on the top-right corner and select the “Settings” option. This action open the Settings tab.

In the “Settings” tab, go to the “Privacy and Security” tab on the sidebar and then click the “Security” option on the right panel.

This is the page where you can manage various security settings in Chrome. Here, click the “Manage JavaScript optimization & security” option.

Now, select the “Don’t allow sites to use JavaScript optimization” option and you are good to go.

With that, you’ve completely disabled the JavaScript optimization feature in Google Chrome. As I said earlier, while this feature provides some JS optimization to improve performance, it is very minor and you most likely won’t notice any performance drop after disabling it.
