How to Delete Email Account in Thunderbird Email Client

Thunderbird is one of the most popular Windows email clients. In fact, it is my daily driver for managing all my email clients. The best thing about Thunderbird is that it is easy to quickly add a new email account and even transfer the Thunderbird profile from one computer to another. However, what if you no longer need an email account? For example, maybe you no longer have access to your work email due to changes in your role, need to re-authenticate, etc. Whatever the reason, if you no longer need an email account, you can remove it with just a couple of clicks.

In this quick and easy tutorial, I will show the steps you should follow to delete an email account in the Thunderbird email client. Let’s get started.

Before You Begin

Steps to Delete Email Account in Thunderbird Email Client

  1. Press the “Start” button.
  2. Search and open “Thunderbird“.
  3. Right-click on the email account you want to delete.
  4. Select the “Settings” option.
  5. Click the “Account Actions” dropdown menu on the bottom-left corner.
  6. Select the “Remove Account” option.
  7. Select the “Remove Message Data” checkbox.
  8. Click the “Remove” button.
  9. With that, the email account is deleted from Thunderbird.
  10. Close the Thunderbird email client.

Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)

First, open the Thunderbird application. To do that, open the Start menu by clicking the Start button on your Taskbar. Next, search for “Thunderbird” and select the “Open” option.

Once the Thunderbird application opens, right-click on the email account you want to delete on the left sidebar and select the “Settings” option.

The above action opens the Account Settings tab. Here, make sure your email account is selected on the left sidebar and click the “Account Actions” dropdown menu. Next, select the “Remove Account” option.

In the Remove Account and Data dialog, select the “Remove message data” checkbox and click the “Remove” button.

Note: If you don’t want to delete account data like local emails, keep the “Remove message data” checkbox unchecked.

That is it. As soon as you click the “Remove” button, the email account is deleted from Thunderbird. You can follow the same steps if you want to delete more than one email account.
