The first user account you create in Windows 11 will always have administrative privileges. Any subsequent user accounts you make, be it an online or offline account, are set as Standard Users. If you are wondering, a Standard user account is limited compared to an Administrator account. For example, Standard users cannot freely install applications, make advanced system changes, and more.

Though limited, a Standard user account is handy when you have multiple users and want them managed, restricted, and protected. For example, if you create a user account for your child, elderly, or another family member, it is better to set their user account as a Standard User. That way, your system will be safe from unwanted applications, configuration changes, etc.

As good as the default configuration is, there will be times when you need to change the account type in Windows 11. For instance, maybe you want to make a Standard user to Administrator user to install some application. Once that is done, you can change their user account type back to Standard user.

Thankfully, Windows 11 makes it really easy to change an Administrator user account to a Standard user account or a Standard user account to an administrator user account. All it takes is a few clicks.

Change account type in Windows 11

You can change the Windows 11 account type from the Account page in the Settings app. It is as easy as selecting a user account type from the dropdown menu. Here is how to do it in simple and easy steps.

Launch Settings in Windows 11.
Click on “Accounts” on the sidebar.
Click on the “Family & other users” option.
Example the user account.
Press the “Change account type” button.
Select the account type from the dropdown menu.
Click the “Ok” button.
Close the Settings app.
With that, you have successfully changed the user account type in Windows 11.

Since we can modify the Windows 11 user account type from the Settings app, we need to open it first. You can use the “Win + I” shortcut or click the “Settings” icon in the Quick Settings panel.

After opening the Windows 11 PC Settings app, choose the “Accounts” option on the sidebar. This is where you will find all the user account-related options. Since we want to change the account type of another user, click on the “Family & other users” option.

This page shows all the user accounts on your computer. Click and expand the user account you want to modify the account type. Next, click on the “Change account type” button.

The above action will open a configuration window. Here, select the account from the dropdown menu. For example, I want to make the “WindowsLoop” user an administrator. So, I chose the “Administrator” option from the dropdown menu. Click the “Ok” button to save changes.
