How To Change Taskbar Size in Windows 11

With a simple trick, you can change the taskbar height and size of icons to small, medium, or large in Windows 11. Here is how to do it.

Two striking features of Windows 11 are the redesigned Start Menu and Taskbar. Though the redesign is a significant departure from the age-old design of the left-aligned taskbar and Start menu with a visible app list, it still looks cohesive, compact, and gorgeous. All in all, Windows 11’s design simplified a lot of things while retaining almost all the functionality.

In previous versions of Windows, you can change the taskbar height and size of icons to small or big directly from the Settings app. All you have to do is toggle the “Use small taskbar buttons” option. This allowed users to customize the taskbar as needed. In Windows 11, you can no longer do that.

For a vast majority of users, this is not that big of a deal. But some might need this feature. For example, if you are a laptop user, small taskbar icons on Windows 11 will increase the overall screen space. The good thing is, even though the Windows 11 settings app has no option in it, you can still modify the taskbar height and size of taskbar icons via a simple registry trick. It is pretty easy to do.

This quick and straightforward Windows 11 guide lets me show you the steps to change the Taskbar height and size of icons.

Change Taskbar Height and Size of Icons

To change the taskbar icons size and taskbar height, we need to create and modify a single registry value called “TaskbarSi.” It is pretty simple to do. Here is how.

  1. Open the Start menu.
  2. Search and open “Registry Editor.”
  3. Copy “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced”.
  4. Paste it in the address bar and press Enter.
  5. Right-click on the “Advanced” folder.
  6. Select “New -> DWORD value.”
  7. Type “TaskbarSi” as the new value name.
  8. Double-click on the “TaskbarSi” value.
  9. Set one of the below values in the Value Data field.
  10. Click the “Ok” button.
  11. Close the Registry Editor.
  12. Restart the computer.

Below are the same steps in a bit more detail.

First, press the Start key on your keyboard, search for “Registry Editor,” and click on the result to open it.

open registry editor in Windows 11

After opening the Registry Editor, paste the below path in the address bar and press Enter. This action will take you to the relevant registry folder.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

go to the advanced registry folder

Right-click on the “Advanced” folder and select the “New -> DWORD Value” option.

create new dword value

Name the new value as “TaskbarSi” and press the Enter button.

create TaskbarSi dword value

After that, double-click on the “TaskbarSi” value. Next, set one of the below values and click the “Ok” button. For instance, if you want small taskbar icons or big taskbar icons, set the Value Data to “0” or “2,” respectively.

  • 0 — Small size icons & slim taskbar
  • 1 — Medium size icons with medium height taskbar (default).
  • 2 — Big size icons with a large taskbar.
set value data

After setting the Value Data, close the Registry Editor and restart the computer. Alternatively, you can restart explorer too. Once you do that, you should see the taskbar with the new height and icons size.

I hope that helps.
