How To Change Narrator Math Reading Speech Style in Windows 11 (Clear, Simple, or Literal)

If you are using Narrator for math reading, you can change the speech style using Settings in Windows 11.

One of the recent, yet highly useful features for students and academics alike is the math reading with Narrator. It can read aloud equations, fractions, exponents, etc. By default, the math reading mode uses ‘Clear Speak,’ which is good enough for most people. However, if you want, you can change the math reading speech style to be much simpler or more literal. This is pretty helpful if you want to customize the Narrator’s math reading speech to match your style or want to better understand what’s shown on the screen.

Thankfully, you can do it using the Settings app directly, no need for any registry or group policy changes or installing new software. So, without further ado, let me show you how to do it in simple steps. Let’s get started.

Before You Start

  • You should be running Windows 11 build 26340.9354 (v26H2) or higher to follow the steps below.

To change Narrator’s math reading speech style from clear to simple or literal, you can use the Settings app. Here’s how:

To start off, right-click the Start icon on the taskbar and select the “Settings” option or press “Windows key + I” to launch the Settings app. After it opens, click “Accessibility” on the left sidebar and then click “Narrator” on the right page.

The above action opens the Narrator options page in the Settings app. Here, scroll down to the “Math” section and then click the “Math reading” option to open the math reading options page in the Settings app.

Now, scroll down to the “Math speech” section and then select the math reading speech style from the “Speech style” dropdown menu. You can choose between “Clear speak“, “Simple speak“, and “Literal speak“. Clear speak is the default speech style.

After selecting the speech style, try the math reading and to test the speech style.
