How To Change Minimum Drag Distance in Windows 11 & 10

Learn the simplest way to change the minimum drag distance in Windows 11 and Windows 10 to reduce accidental dragging of files & folders.

On Windows, you can drag and move any file or folder by simply clicking and holding it with your mouse, then moving the pointer. By default, even the slightest mouse movement while holding down the click starts dragging the file. While this is how it should work, depending on your monitor resolution & DPI settings, and mouse settings, the default drag setting might cause a lot of accidental dragging. For example, even when you try to click a file or folder, it can cause accidental dragging if you hold down the mouse button for a fraction of a millisecond too long.

To reduce this kind of annoyance, you can change the minimum drag distance in the Registry Editor. By increasing this distance, you tell Windows to wait for a more significant mouse movement before it starts a drag. This significantly reduces the problem of accidental dragging.

In this quick and easy guide, I will show you how to do it in simple steps. Let’s get started.
