Steps to change default browser in Windows 10

When you install a browser in Windows 10, it automatically registers itself as a browser. This means that rather than digging through the browser menus and options, you can use the Windows 10 Settings app to change the default browser. No matter what browser you want to use, the steps are the same.

  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Go to “Apps.”
  3. Select “Default apps” on the sidebar.
  4. Click on the browser option under “Web b rowser.”
  5. Select the browser of your choice from the list.
  6. Click the “Switch anyway” link.
  7. Close the Settings app.

First, open the Settings app. To do that, either press the “Windows Key + I” shortcut or search for “Settings” in the Start menu. After opening the Settings app, go to the “Apps -> Default apps” page. As the name suggests, this is where you can set or change the most common default apps in Windows 10.

On the right panel, click on the browser option under the “Web Browser” section.

select browser option

As soon as you do that, you will see a list of all the browsers available in your system. From the list, select the browser of your choice. In my case, I’m choosing “Google Chrome” for this example.

select browser

If the browser you chose is not Microsoft Edge, you will see a confirmation dialog. Click the “Switch anyway” link. Not the “Check it out” button.

confirm browser change

As soon as you click on the “Switch anyway” link, Windows 10 will set the new browser as the default browser. The change is saved & applied immediately. There is no need to restart the system.
