Windows 10 lets you set your favorite browser as the default browser. Here are the steps to change default browser in Windows 10.
To access the internet or to open any website or web service, you must have a good web browser. Like any operating system, Windows 10 comes with its own default browser. Long back, the default browser used to be the Internet Explorer. Now, it is Edge. Compared to Internet Explorer, the Edge browser is leagues ahead in terms of features, compatibility with web technologies, and security.
Though the Edge browser is really good, it might not be for everyone. In those cases, you can change the default browser in Windows 10. That way, you can use your favorite browser without any hiccups. There may be any number of reasons to change the default browser. Those include but are not limited to not liking Edge, already a user of another browser, wanting to try out a new browser, etc. No matter the reason, Windows 10 provides a simple way to change the default browser.
In this quick and basic how-to guide, let me show you the steps to change the default browser in Windows 10.
Important note: Install the browser of your choice before proceeding. For example, to set Google Chrome as the default browser, you need to install it first and then follow the steps given below.
Steps to change default browser in Windows 10
When you install a browser in Windows 10, it automatically registers itself as a browser. This means that rather than digging through the browser menus and options, you can use the Windows 10 Settings app to change the default browser. No matter what browser you want to use, the steps are the same.
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to “Apps.”
- Select “Default apps” on the sidebar.
- Click on the browser option under “Web b rowser.”
- Select the browser of your choice from the list.
- Click the “Switch anyway” link.
- Close the Settings app.
First, open the Settings app. To do that, either press the “Windows Key + I” shortcut or search for “Settings” in the Start menu. After opening the Settings app, go to the “Apps -> Default apps” page. As the name suggests, this is where you can set or change the most common default apps in Windows 10.
On the right panel, click on the browser option under the “Web Browser” section.
As soon as you do that, you will see a list of all the browsers available in your system. From the list, select the browser of your choice. In my case, I’m choosing “Google Chrome” for this example.
If the browser you chose is not Microsoft Edge, you will see a confirmation dialog. Click the “Switch anyway” link. Not the “Check it out” button.
As soon as you click on the “Switch anyway” link, Windows 10 will set the new browser as the default browser. The change is saved & applied immediately. There is no need to restart the system.
If you cannot see your browser in the list, it is possible that you did not install it. Make sure you have installed the browser and then follow the steps.
That is all. It is that simple to change default browser in Windows 10.
