There are two major types of SSDs, SATA (Serial Advanced Technology Attachment) and NVMe (nonvolatile memory express). If your system has an SSD, it falls into one of these two types. Knowing what type of SSD is in your computer—SATA or NVMe—can be important either to assess its performance or for future upgrades. The problem is that most system manufacturers never explicitly mention the SSD type, they generally only indicate that the system has an SSD.
Thankfully, you can use Windows 11 settings to quickly find whether your SSD is SATA or NVMe. This quick and simple tutorial will show you the steps. Let’s get started.
Good to know: Find SSD type in Windows 10
Steps To Find if SSD Is SATA or NVMe
- Open Settings to open “Windows key + I”.
- Navigate to the “System” tab on the sidebar.
- Click the “Storage” option.
- Click “Advanced Storage Settings“.
- Select “Disks & volumes“.
- Click “Properties” next to your SSD name.
- The SSD type is noted next to “Bus type“.
- With that, you now know whether your SSD is SATA or NVMe.
Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)
First, launch the Settings app in Windows 11. To do that, either press the “Windows key + I” shortcut or right-click the “Start menu” and select the “Settings” option. Once it opens, go to the “System” tab from the sidebar and click the “Storage” option on the right panel.

In the Storage page, scroll down and click the “Advanced Storage Settings” option. This action expands the section. Next, click the “Disks & volumes” option.

On this page, you will see all the hard drives and their partitions. For example, I have three hard drives (all SSDs) and four partitions. Find your hard drive and click the “Properties” button next to it.

In the properties window, you will see the SSD type next to the “Bus Type” row. For example, my SSD type is “NVMe“.

If your SSD type is SATA, you will see “SATA” in the “Bus Type” row.

That is all. It is that simple to find the SSD type in Windows 11.
