In any computer, BIOS or UEFI, more generally called motherboard firmware, is an important component. When you power on the system, this firmware gets started first and performs several different tests and actions before handing over control to the Windows operating system. Considering the importance of the BIOS or UEFI, it is important that you know your BIOS or UEFI firmware version. Knowing the BIOS version or UEFI version helps you troubleshoot problems and make better hardware purchasing decisions, especially for newer hardware.
Thankfully, Windows has several different ways to find the BIOS or UEFI version. So, in this quick guide let me show you some simple ways to find the motherboard firmware version in Windows.
Note: Depending on your motherboard and when you bought it, you might be using either BIOS or UEFI. If you are interested, here’s how to check. It doesn’t matter if it is BIOS or UEFI, you can follow all the methods shown below.

Find BIOS or UEFI Firmware Version
Like I said before, there are several different methods to check the BIOS version or UEFI version. I’m showing 3 most common and reliable ways. Follow the one you are comfortable with.
1. System Information Method
Windows has an awesome built-in tool called System Information. As you can tell from the name, this tool gives you a ton of information about your system.
1. Open the Run dialog box with Win + R keyboard shortcut.
2. Type “msinfo32” in the blank field and click “Ok“.
3. In the System Information window, find the “BIOS Version/Date” section. On the right-panel, you will see the BIOS or UEFI version number and date.
2. via DirectX Diagnostic Tool
As an alternative, you can also use the DirectX Diagnostic tool too. Generally, this tool is used to get information about the DirectX components and drives that are installed on your system. However, the DirectX Diagnostic tool also provides you with BIOS or UEFI version number as part of the general info.
1. Open Run dialog box with Win + R keyboard shortcut.
2. Type “dxdiag” in the blank field and press “Enter“.
3. You will see an information window, click on the “Yes” button to continue.
4. Once the scan is done, you can find the BIOS version or UEFI version right next to “BIOS” in the “System” tab.
3. Command to find BIOS or UEFI Version Number
If you are comfortable using the command-line, you can get the same information with a single line command. The best thing is, you don’t have to go through a bunch of other info to get to the point.
1. Open Command Prompt from the Start menu. You can search for “cmd” and click on the Command Prompt or cmd.exe result.
2. Now, execute the below command, you will see the version number right away.
wmic bios get manufacturer, smbiosbiosversion
