How to Create a New Profile in the Microsoft Edge Browser

Most don’t know this, but the Microsoft Edge browser lets you create multiple profiles with just a few clicks. Each profile is separate from one another in terms of installed extensions, browsing history, saved passwords, autofill data, and other browser settings. One of the biggest use cases for creating multiple profiles in the Edge browser is to separate your workflow. For example, you can create different profiles for personal, work, financial, shopping, etc., each with its own settings, extensions, history, and autofill data. If needed, you can also sign in to your Microsoft account in any and all profiles to sync its settings with the cloud.

In this quick and straightforward tutorial, I will show you how to create a new profile in the Microsoft Edge browser and delete the ones you don’t need. Let’s get started.

Steps to Create a New Profile in Microsoft Edge Browser

  1. Open the Start menu by pressing the “Windows key”.
  2. Search for “Microsoft Edge” and click “Open“.
  3. Click on the “User profile” icon in the top-right corner.
  4. Select the “Set up new personal profile” option.
  5. To create a work or school profile, select “Other profiles” > “Set up a new work or school profile“.
  6. Click the “Start without your data” button.
  7. Click the “Confirm and start browsing” button.
  8. Click the “Next” button.
  9. Click “Finish“.
  10. With that, you’ve created a new profile in Edge. You can open it by clicking the user icon and then selecting the profile.

Detailed Steps (With Screenshots)

First, open the Microsoft Edge browser. To do that, open the Start menu, search for “Microsoft Edge”, and click “Open”. Alternatively, you can click the Microsoft Edge icon on the taskbar, if it is pinned.

Once the browser opens, click the “User profile icon” on the top-right corner and click the “Set up new personal profile” option.

Note: To create a work or school profile, select “Other profiles” > “Set up a new work or school profile“.

The above action opens a new Edge instance with profile creation wizard. Click the “Start without your data” to continue.

Note: If you want to sign-in your Microsoft account to sync browsing history, passwords, etc., click the “Sign in to sync data” button.

Click the “Confirm and start browsing” button.

Customize layout and theme for the new profile and click “Next“.

Finally, click the “Finish” button. With that, you’ve created a new profile in the Microsoft Edge browser.

From now on, whenever you want to open a specific Edge profile, click the “User profile icon” on the top-right corner and then select the profile you want to open.

Customize a Profile in the Microsoft Edge Browser

By default, the new profile’s name will be “Profile <number>” and it uses a generic user icon. If you want, you can rename the profile and change it icon so that it’s easier recognize and open. Here’s how to do it.

  1. First, open the Edge browser.
  2. Click on the “User profile” icon on the top-right corner.
  3. Select the profile for which you want to change the name and/or icon.
  4. In the new profile window, type “edge://settings/profiles” in the address bar and press Enter.
  5. Click on the “Edit” icon next to the profile name.
  6. Now, type the name of your choice in the first field.
  7. Select the icon of your choice from the available list.
  8. Click the “Update” button.
  9. With that, you’ve rename and changed the icon of the profile in Edge.
