Change Default Playback Device on Windows 11

changing default playback device on Windows 11 featured

If you are using multiple audio output devices such as speakers and headphones, you might have a preference for one over the other. For example, you might want to use headphones over the built-in speakers. In that case, you can set your favorite audio playback device as default on Windows 11. That way, you don’t have to manually switch audio devices every time you connect your favorite headphones or speakers.

So, without further ado, let’s get started and learn how to set your favorite audio playback devices as default on Windows 11.

Change the default playback device

First of all, ensure the audio device you want to set as default is connected to your computer. For example, I want to set my wired headphones as default. So, I connected them. If you didn’t connect, you will not see it in the audio devices list. Next, open the Settings window (press Windows key + I) and go to the “System” > “Sound” page.

On the Sound page, scroll down to the bottom and click on the “More sound settings” option.

You will immediately see the Sound panel. Here, ensure you are in the “Playback” tab, find your favorite playback device, right-click on it, and choose the “Set as Default Device” option.

As soon as you select the option, Windows 11 changes the default audio output device to the selected playback device. You will see a green check mark and the words “Default device” under the device name to indicate the same. From now on, whenever you plug in or connect this device, Windows will automatically switch to it. When the default device is not connected, Windows 11 will automatically choose another playback device. However, it will not change the default setting.

I hope this small Windows 11 tutorial helped you.
