How to Boost Volume in Windows 10 & Chrome (Volume Booster)

When listening to low-volume audio, it’s helpful to boost the volume over the limit. Here’s how to boost volume in Windows 10 and Chrome.

If you’ve ever used the VLC Media Player, you might know that it lets you boost the volume over and above 100%. i.e., you can boost the volume to 200%. However, Windows 10, in general, won’t let you go beyond the 100% volume. If the audio you are listening to is too low, boosting the volume over and above the limit is quite helpful.

Thankfully, it is easy to boost volume in Windows 10 and Chrome. Let me show you how.

1. Boost Volume in Windows 10 with Loudness Equalization

Windows has a built-in feature called Loudness Equalization. It is designed to boost Windows volume so that the volume will be increased over the default limit. The volume boost makes the quiet voices or sounds more audible. Not only does the loudness equalization boost the sound, but it also normalizes the deafening sounds so that you don’t hurt your ears.

As good as it is, the loudness equalization is buried deep within the speaker properties. Additionally, Loudness Equalization should be configured on a per speaker basis to boost volume in Windows 10. That is, if you have a different set of speakers and headphones, you need to enable Loudness Equalization for each of those devices individually to boost audio volume.

Under certain circumstances, boosting volume above normal can damage your speakers or headphones. Add to that; some audio might sound distorted under high volume. So, be careful while using the volume booster.

Here is how to use Loudness Equalization to boost volume in Windows 10.

1. Open the Start Menu.
2. Search for “Control Panel” and open it.
   
3. Select “Large icons” from the “View by” dropdown menu.
4. Find and click on the “Sound” option.
   
5. Select the speaker you are using and click on the “Properties” button.
   
6. Go to the “Enhancements” tab in the Speaker Properties window.
7. Select the checkbox next to “Loudness Equalization“.
   
8. Click on the “Apply” button.
9. Click on the “Ok” button.

As soon as you save the changes, the system volume is boosted to some extent. As of now, there is no way to fine-tune how much the volume is boosted, but you can still increase or decrease the volume to match your requirement.

If you want to disable volume boost in Windows, uncheck the “Loudness Equalization” option in the Speaker Properties and save changes.

2. Boost Volume in Chrome Browser

Sometimes, you want to boost audio from a specific browser tab, website, or webpage like YouTube. In those cases, you don’t have to use the Loudness Equalization, which boosts system-wide volume. You can use a free chrome extension to boost chrome tab volume.

1. Open Chrome browser.
2. Install Volume Master chrome extension.
   
3. Now, go to the tab where you want to boost the volume.
4. Click on the “Volume Master” extension icon.
5. Use the slider to increase the volume boost of the target Chrome tab,
   
6. When using Volume Master to boost chrome volume, you will see a small rectangle in the tab name indicating the extension is in use.

It is that simple to boost chrome browser volume. Even though the extension allows up to a 600% volume boost, I recommend you don’t boost the volume above 200% as it may hurt your ears and/or damage the speakers.

To normalize the volume, set the slider to 100%.
